I have really enjoyed this project as it was different from everything that we did and I have also realized a lot of new important things in photography. I have gained a lot of inspiration from historical as well as contemporary food photographers. I have realized how big the difference is when it comes to composition or colour and the whole image it self in food photography between now and then. I have also done a research about how except from the composition, important also the light is in food photography, which then helped me in my next task with metering modes. With metering modes I was able to realize the difference between the images. I have done quite a few photo shoots in this projects within tasks as well as some extra ones and final photo shoot as well. Also the research about posters helped me get a lot of inspiration of what I want my final poster to look like. I have really enjoyed making the posters because I have learnt quite a lot of new things with the design as well as Photoshop which are very very useful. I am happy with my final photos as well as my final posters, because they show what I wanted them to show. My style of cafe is clear and I think it's easy to understand what each photo and poster presents.

Task4 - final and mock-up posters
While designing my poster, I had to think mainly about my target audience. There are two parts that I also had to think about while designing my posters. First one is design elements. In design elements we consider things as colour which is very important, lines which we can be very creative with and join or underline the important bits on posters, shapes which we can use to decorate our posters and we can be very creative with them, size is also very important as we need to remember that sometimes smaller things can be more effective than bigger. The second thing is designs principles. Repetition, alignment as well as contrast and proximity are very important.. I have tried to consider and remember about all of the things above.
This is my logo, that I have made in Photoshop for my poster. All I did was applied two shapes on top of each other which are square and heart and then applied text on to it that says ''coffee''. I have decided to keep the same colour of typography as well as white heart but I kept changing the colour of the square to match the colours from a poster.
These are my first two mock up poster. I have done a lot of photos in landscape format therefore I had to really think about my background for the posters. The first thing that I did was placed the photo and coloured in the background. I have chosen this colour to match the table cloth that is in my photo. I have also cut the letters out from a different photo from the same photo shoot, out of the table cloth because I wanted to make sure that the heading also match the photo and the poster in general. I didn't want to add any other colours so I have decided to pick another colour from a table cloth and make my logo this colour so that it matches everything n the poster as well. My text which is white looks a lot better whet it's smaller on the second poster than in the first one. I think by leaving some space in the poster it looks a lot better. Also I prefer the font in the second poster because it's bold and it looks better. I have also but a border around the photo and the letters to make them stand out a little bit more. In my opinion the second poster is a lot better, even thought there is not much difference between them.
This is my second mock up poster. I have decided to separate the background into two. I have also put some extra half circles as a decoration. I have decided to put the photo at the bottom of the poster, putting text on the photo. I have also put the text at the top, but I don't think the font works well. I have used repetition of colours, as well as shapes.
This is my next mock up poster. I have learnt that sometimes less is more, therefore there is not much going on in this poster. I have used a full photo as the background, then all I did was I have added the logo, changing the colour of it to brown to match the coffee beans and lower the opacity. I have used the colours repetitively. ~CAFE~ is in white, just the same as the cup, I wanted to keep it simple but not very boring therefore I have decided to use two lines at both ends of the word.
This is another mock up poster that I did. The first thing that I did was I have divided the background into two to make sure I have two different colours, red at the top and dark cream at the bottom. I have first of all decided to place the image at the top leaving a little bit of space at the side, also putting a border around it but then I have decided to cover the lines that join together in the background and I have made the photo bigger. I couldn't decide which one look better, but I think both ways work out somehow. I have cut out the heading from a different photo of a wooden cutting board which is in the background for my photo. I have decided to put it at the top, but if I look at the poster now I think it's a little bit too big. At the bottom I have used two different types of fonts. I was struggling to pick the right one, but I think either of them work in this poster. I have used repetition of colours in this poster.
This is my next mock up poster. This time I have also used a full photo for a background of this poster and also decided to make it black and white as well. I have changed the contrast a of this photo a little bit. I have decided to use big text at the top and at the bottom. I have kept to black and white colours of the text but to make it stand out a little bit I have decided to change the colour of one letter to red. I have also kept the logo red and changed the opacity to about 80%. I really like the font that I have used for this photo and in my opinion this is the best poster out of all of them. I have used a lot of repetition of colours in this poster. I have decided to use this poster as my final one.
This is my final mock up poster. The first thing that I did was cut out coffee beans out of a different photo from my second photo shoot to place it as a background. Then I have placed a dark cream colour other the photo and lower the opacity to get a nice texture as my background instead of just one colour. Then I have placed the image at the top right corner of the photo and placed it in a circle, adding another small circle next to it I have placed my logo in there. In my first poster I have decided to use big bold text, but then I have decided to also see what it will look like if I will use a smaller size text with different fonts etc. I think the second one worked a lot better, and my making some words bold and different coloured also adding shape behind the text not next to it worked a lot better. I have used colours repetitively in my poster. I have used colours that in my opinion match together very well and they also present the colours of coffee. I have also used two shapes, which I think worked very well in this poster. In my second poster there is a lot of free space and it looks a lot better than in the first poster where there is not much free space. I definitely think the second poster is much better than the first one. I have decided to use it as my final poster but making the photo a little bit bigger along with the circle with a logo.

Final photos
This is my first final photo that I took during my first shoot. I didn't really have a plan on taking photos while I get the coffee ready, but because while preparing the coffee I was also setting my camera up at the same time, I thought about taking photo of this coffee as it is going to be my main subject in the rest of the photos. I didn't have many of them, therefore I had to pick one and edit it a little bit. I have cropped it and changed it to black and white. I have picked it because I though it would look nice to show preparation of the coffee with the rest of my photos.
This is my second photo that I really like during this photo shoot. I have used natural light in the kitchen. I have used a tripod and decided to take this photo from eye level angle to show three different colours of coffee as well as the cake. I have used the same table cloth in my first photo shoot. I have decided to use it as my background and foreground. I wanted full photo to be in focus so I have used high aperture and I have also used spot metering mode.
This is another photo that I really like. I have decided to take this photo this time from high angle, to show how delicious the coffee looks from the top as well. I have decided to set my camera up with high aperture to have more in focus rather than show depth of field. I have also decided to do colour popping in this photo, which you can't really see because the background of the photo is black and white it self already. But I really like the composition of this photo and I think it's one of my favourite ones from this shoot because I have presented what I wanted to.
This is another photo that I really liked but it's very similar to the previous one. In fact it has the same composition but as we can see the settings were different, the aperture was a lot smaller than in the previous photo. I have also kept the colours of the full photo.
In this photo I have used natural lightning as in the rest of my photos from this shoot. I have decided to keep the same eye level angle as in previous photo, but this time place the cake in the front and the coffee in the back. I wanted this photo to be a little bit different therefore I have made the coffee in the background out of focus and concentrated more on a cake this time, to do this I have lower the aperture down to create nice depth of field. I have used the same background and foreground as in the rest of my photos from this shoot. I have also used spot metering mode for this photo. I am happy with the final result of this photo because I have shown what I wanted to show.
This is my first photo from the second photo shoot. In this photo shoot I have also used a natural light coming through a window but this time it was a different location. In this photo, I have used quite a few equipment therefore I had to really think about the composition. I have used tripod and eye level angle. I have decided to place a white small table against grey wall to create my background and foreground in this photo shoot. I have also decided to place a small piece of pink and white material on a white table to separate the white cup from a white table.
In this photo I have used a natural light coming through a big window as well. This photo has been taken from birds eye view angle because I wanted to show the coffee inside the cup. I have concentrated more on the beans around the cup rather than the coffee inside the cup. As my background I have tried not to get any of the white table in therefore I have cut a little bit of a cup at the top.I have used spot metering mode to take this photo.
In this photo I have also used a natural light in my living room. I have taken this photo from eye level angle.I I have used an extra props, because I wanted to give this photo more colour, so I have decided to put a pink doughnut in. I like the photo in general because it look neat and it presents coffee nice, just as I wanted it to look. To take this photo I have chosen spot metering mode.
In this photo I have also used a natural light. I have though about leaving a little bit of space at the top for writing, if I was going to use this photo for my poster. I have placed the coffee cup at the bottom at focused it on it. I take taken this photo from high angle, also using tripod. I have used spot metering mode because I think it works the best in my photos. I am happy with this photo and I am defiantly going to use it on my poster.
This photo has been taken from high angle in natural light. I really like the composition and the idea of this photo but the left side of the photo isn't very clear. I was using manual focus and I didn't really that I have concentrated on the coffee and not the full photo. I have used a wooden cutting board as my background because I thought that the colours of cup and coffee beans will look nice on wooden background.
I have used natural light for this photo. I have decided to take this photo at eye level angle, using wooden cutting board as my background. I have used a tripod. I have decided to put it on a wooden board so that the white cup would stand out as well as the coffee beans which are falling out of the cup. I really like this photo and I am going to use it in one of my posters.
This is a photo that I did in natural light. I have taken this photo from eye level angle. My background is a dark wall and I have decided to use a wooden board as my foreground again, that was placed on a white table against the wall. I have decided to fill the cup up with coffee beans instead of coffee, I have also decided to put some coffee beans on a plate in front of the cup. I am happy with this photo because it shows what I wanted to show and it also matches my style very well.
This is my photo from a final photo shoot, that I did. I have decided to use artificial light in this photo shoot. I have used two lamps on each side to create shadows. I have took this photo from low angle. I have used a basket as my foreground and dark coloured wall as my background. I have used spot metering mode for this photo. I really like this photo and I want to use it in one of my final posters.
My first two photo shoot were very successful. I am happy with these photos and I have picked quite a lot of photos from the first two photo shoot because I think there was a lot of good and interesting photos. From the third photo shoot, it was more of experimenting with light therefore there was only one or two that I liked. My last photo shoot weren't very successful because of the lightning and I didn't properly plan the composition and different angles of the photos. Also the lightning wasn't very good and I don't really like any of the photos from the last shoot.
Task 3 - planning final photo shoot
Final photo shoot plan
I am going to do few final photo shoot to get the best photos I can. I am going to do them all in different days to get different lightning. For all of the I will use indoor location, which will be either the kitchen or living room. I will also use my camera with two different kind of lenses and tripod for each shoot.
My first photo shoot will not be long. I am going to do it in the kitchen because I have a big window there, where I can get a lot of natural light coming through. I am going to photograph a coffee, in a nice and long see through glass. The coffee will the three coloured, I will need milk, and two different kinds of coffee to do this. I am also going to buy a cake that will look nice against my coffee. I will use a tablecloth as my background and foreground. I will use different kinds of compositions and well as to capture the coffee with a cake. I will also use different kinds of metering modes, but mainly spot metering mode.
My second photo shoot will be done in my living room. It will be all done on a small white table which will be the foreground and a grey background which will be simply the wall in a living room. In some of my photos I am also planning to change the foreground and all that I am going to do is put a wooden cutting board which I think would look nice. In this photo shoot I will use a lot of equipment, but they're ll going to be related to coffee. My main subject will be a small, white coffee cup with a small white plate. I will use a made coffee as well as some coffee beans. I will also use some other equipment and maybe some cake as well. I will take photos in different compositions, from different angles, using only natural light. I will mainly use spot metering mode.
My third small photo shoot that I am planning to do will be just a cup and plate with coffee beans. I will place them on a basket, against a grey wall. This time I am planning to play around with shadows and different lightnings. I am going to use two table lamps to create some hopefully interesting shadows. I will use spot metering mode for this photo shoot and mainly take photos from eye level angle.
My fourth photo shoot will be done in a kitchen. I will use natural light again, and a different table cloth as a background and foreground. I will photograph a glass of milk with frozen coffee cubes inside it. I will also put some biscuits in the background. I will try different metering modes as well as different compositions to take a perfect shot.

Task 2 - style and poster research
Style research
I have decided to do a research about different kinds of food photography styles, before I decided on what style of food photography I am going to do. I have found six different types of food photography styles which are:
- Product
- Journalist and straight forward
- Bright and propped
- Lifestyle
- Bold and clean
- Chiaroscuro
Product
Product style in food photography is very important as majority of photographers use this style for advert photography. The aim of this style is to present the product in the best way to be able to sell it. The characteristics of this style are: usually black or white background sometimes with simple location, glossy image, usually studio light with small shadows, careful and clean styling.
Journalist and straight forward
Journalist style is simply the preparation of food. It's goal is to show the back story of how the food comes to be, to show what the food looks like before it's done and what it looks like when it's being prepared. The characteristics for this style are: documentary style, action shots, minimal props, strong and clear light.
Bright and propped
The characteristics of this style are: soft light, use of colours and patterns, happy images, full framing with foreground and background, vintage props. There is more of the scene available to these photos, we can use quite a few props, relevant to our food to present it in it's best way.
Lifestyle
In this style you have to think about the full image, you need to think about the background, the context in which the food is eaten and the story behind the photo. In my opinion this is one of the most hardest styles of food photography. The characteristics of this style are: more context to the food, larger aperture to bring more into the frame of the photo, casual styling.
Bold and clean
Bold and clean style concentrates only on the food, with few distractions from the main subject. It's idea is to make the food standout on it's own, by keeping the rest of the image very clean. By doing this the eye is immediately drawn the attention to the food, and it makes the viewer focus on the interesting details within the food rather than concentrate on a scene to create more interest. The characteristics of this style are: strong focus on the food, tighter framing, minimal props and clean styling, solid background, balance between light and shadow.

Chiaroscuro
This style's aim is to create a contrast between light and dark. The characteristics of this food photography style are: use of light and deep for dramatic focus on subject, moody images, strong contrast.
My style

Contact sheets for the rest of my food photos:
My style will be based on cafe, mainly different kinds of coffees, tea's and cakes. Target audience for my style is mainly adults but also teenagers, who like to go to cafe's in their spare time, at break or during shopping for a nice coffee, tea and cake. I have gained the ideas from my research as well as practice photos that I took before planning as well as lunch photos that we had to take for five days. They have really helped me because I have realized which techniques work and which are hard to do and how I can improve them. The images are going to be commercial because they I will show them in the best possible way.
Poster research
I have decided to do research of historical as well as some contemporary food posters for restaurants, cafes and different kinds of advertisements, but first of all I have decided to do a small research about typography and see how it can be used, and how important it is.
Typography
There are different types of typography and the one that I am interested in and I did research about is display typography which is used on book covers, posters and different kinds of advertising.I have research more in depth about advertising typography. Typography is very important when it comes to advertising different things on for example posters. It simply means 'to write'. Typography posters can be very creative, but we also need to remember about the colour and the size, which are two most important things. Designers usually use typography to create a mood in an advertisement. It is often used to catch the viewers attention, that's why it also needs to e readable and creative at the same time.
Contemporary food posters
This first contemporary food poster that I have found, is an advertisement of milk. As we all know milk is good for our teeth, the designer decided to place the glasses of milk in an shape of a jaw, so that the glasses of milk represent our white teeth. It's really creative and it really caught my attention. There isn't much of text on this poster. We can only see their logo in the bottom right, which even tough is small, it's clear to see because the colours are matched so well that is stands out. The background of the photo is plain, which in this case works well because we can clearly see the image of milk. I also really like the reflection of the glasses. The layout of this poster is really simple and effective, but I think there is a little bit of space wasted. As in most of the posters we can find the text at the bottom and a photo at the top. The target audience for this poster would be mainly children but parents as well.
This is another contemporary poster of a cafe. I really like this and it also gave me a lot of inspiration because this is something that I would like to do. I really like the layout of this poster. We have a photo at one side and the text, which is a price list on the other. We have a coffee with a steam, and some coffee beans at the side. I really like the steam even though it look a little bit fake to me, but it presents the coffee very well. The beans give us an extra effect to show that the coffee is fresh. It is a very straight forward poster but it looks really nice. The text stands out from the dark background, heading is big and bold and easy to see, subheading are also bold but smaller that the main heading and bigger from the rest of the text. We can also see an important message on this poster which is the telephone number and it's also nice and bold and easy to see. I really like this photo in general and I have definitely gained a lot of inspiration from it.
Some of these contemporary posters have really caught my eye because of the creativity. I also really like the idea of how some of them are in landscape format instead of like we see most of them which are in a portrait format.
Historical food posters
This McDonald's advertisement from 1969 as we can see is a lot more realistic than McDonald's advertisements today. There is a big difference. This food advert has a very simple layout as well as composition. The subject which is big mac, is take from eye level angle and it's composed at the bottom of the frame of the advert. Typography in this advert is also very simple. There is simple bold, white text which tells us what they're advertising, and a small text at the bottom of the advert with slogan and their logo, which we can't really see in this photo because it has been cropped. White and bold text stands out from the dark background even though it's not very interesting and it's just simple. I don't think there is specific target audience in terms of age, it can be just for anyone who wan't to eat something and people, both children and adults who like fast food. I really like this advert, even though I don't think it looks very interesting and attractive, I think it look really realistic and that's what is good about this advert. McDonald's now look really fake, all sandwiches look really fake because they are trying to make them look really good, where as this one looks exactly the same as we would get it in McDonald's if we were going to buy it. In 1969 people might didn't like this because the sandwich doesn't look really good but now when we compare them to adverts from 2014 we can see a difference and in my opinion this one looks better even with the dull colours and not very interesting layout.
This is another historical food advertisement which I think is very interesting and I have few reasons why I can get inspiration from this.First of all, I really like the idea how they have shown in what situations the subject that is being advertised can be used an how. Giving examples on this poster is very helpful for the viewers but in this case I think the way the photos have been layout is a little bit too much. There is too many photos and you don't know what to look at first, it happened in my case. The typography is also very simple, which is usually good, but in this case the title isn't outstanding and the first thing we realise while looking at this poster is the photos because of the bright colours. At the bottom they also gave us ideas of how it can be used and where, they have wrote this is small black writing against white background, it's good because even though it's small it's still readable. Target audience for this poster would be families, friends and lovers who like spending nice and warm day out, going on picnic in nice places.
From the research that I have done I have realized that historical posters, all had simple layout as well as typography. The layout was simple, there was just one photo either at the bottom of the poster or at the top of the poster, or in some cases there was a collage of simple photos, all put together. Then there was a lot of space, usually white background for a text. The text was always bold, dark and clear to see. It was readable which made it a little bit boring because it wasn't very creative. Target audience was clear and easy to see. All of the historical posters were easy to understand and most of them were also eye catching. Most of the were black and white or had really dull colours, but they were defiantly more realistic than they are now.

Other research
I have also found few TV adverts which have helped me and some of them have really inspired me in terms of composition of the photo as well as how I can style my food to show it from the best side. I have looked at coffee adverts to help me with my style and final photos.
