Summer Project - Retro

Summer project - Retro Fashion

Retro fashion is very unique. The word 'retro' comes from the Latin prefix retro, meaning 'backward, or in past time'. We consider the past fashion as retro. Therefore we can say that the fashion from 60's, 70's or 80's is retro. The 1960's featured a number of diverse trends. It was the decade that broke many fashion traditions, mirroring social movements during the time. Mary Quant invented the mini-skirts, and Jackie Kennedy introduced the pillbox hat, both becoming extremely popular. False eye lashes was worn by women throughout the 1960's, and their hairstyles were a variety of lengths and styles, The hippies movement late in the decade also exerted a strong influence on ladies' clothing styles, including bell-bottom jeans, tie-dye and batik fabrics, as well as paisley prints. The 1970's fashion, often called 'Me Decade', began with a continuation of a mini skirts, bell bottoms and the hippie look from the late 1960's and eventually became one of the most iconic decades for fashion ever. The 70's were perhaps one of the most individualists decades for fashion ever. By the early 1970's it was difficult for many people to decide what was in style and what wasn't. Generally the most famous silhouette of the mid and late 1970's for both men and women was that on tight on top and loose on bottom.

Commercial fashion

Commercial fashion, fashion photography is probably the best known type of commercial photography, as these types of photographs shows up mostly in advertisements.Commercial fashion photography involves taking pictures for commercial use, mostly used in catalogues. Commercial fashion is used to promote and sell a product therefore it need to be presented in the best possible way. You need to be also very creative to present the fashion to viewers in the very interesting way. Commercial fashion photographs, mostly in catalogues, are done either in studios so that the viewer can really concentrate on the clothing or in the location that is suitable for the outfit.

 Studio fashion

Studio fashion, studio fashion is not as simple as it seems, We have to remember about the light that will help us to photograph the model. It might take us a while to set it up, but we have to remember to take the time setting everything up as well as we need everything needs to be clear. To present the outfit well, we have to remember to position our model right in the front of the camera, because in studios camera usually stay in the same place and the compositions of each image is very simple. To make the photo unique we need to make sure that the model poses right to show and present the outfit they're wearing in their best way. A studio is an ideal place to perform a fashion shoot because photographers can control the lighting and stabilise conditions. If you are shooting in studio environment you need to remember to meter all areas of the scene to avoid unwanted shadows and the use of a separate light meter rather than the one in you camera. In studio photography our aim is only the model who presents the fashion. Fashion photography is all about clothes and beauty, so we have to make sure that we pull all the elements of the scene and the model together to reflect this in the studio.

Location fashion

Location fashion, in location fashion we can present a current popular style. Location is usually matched to the outfit. We can influence the image by moving around and exploring which angle work best to full expose the garment. Sometimes in fashion photography, the photography location matters more than the model. It can not only bring out the natural beauty of the model, but a new level of creativity to the photo. When possible, it's preferable to use the natural sunlight in order to showcase the subject. It can also save you from having to use flash. The sunlight might also inspire the model to go for more exciting shots so that he/she can present the fashion better. The things around you in an outdoor location can inspire your images. You just have to look around you and see what is there. Use statues or landmarks throughout town to get an amazing background. Just be sure to direct the focus of the shot on the model, and not the object that is in the background.

High Location

High fashion, high fashion presents very exclusive as well as unique style. The best known location for high fashion photography is at the catwalk, where models present usually very expensive outfits from the best designers. The lightning is very important in this situation because at the fashion shows it's usually really dark and the light only flashes at the models. Another location for high fashion is studio. Models have to be very unique just as the style is because it need to be presented in the best possible way. To high fashion photography we can consider the best designers such as Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, Gucci, Coco Chanel or Prada. We can also consider the 60's or retro style to high fashion photography as then women liked to look very elegant and stylish. They used to wear nice dresses and always had their hair and make-up done neatly. Same with men, who liked to look elegant in their suits.
