Evaluation of Unit 25 and 7
Task 1
Our
first part of first task was historical and contemporary research. We were
asked to research photographers, film stars, portraiture as well as films, both
historical and contemporary. This has really helped me as I have gained a lot
of inspiration from photographers as well as different films. . I was able to
see the difference between historical and contemporary work of different
photographers. Then I have also researched studio and location portraiture,
which gave me a lot more inspiration. The third part of this task was to
research editorial pieces. This has really helped me to understand what
editorial piece means, and what should be included. It also gave me a lot of
ideas of how editorial piece can be laid out. The last part was to do a
research on our chosen films. I have decided to choose two films which were
Maleficent and Miracle on 34th Street. In this task I have
researched deeply into the films as well as watched both of the films to make
sure I understand the meaning of the films.
As a
group we went out to do location photography. First of all we were taking
photos of each other within our group in an outdoor location. We went to town
and while taking photos we were asked to concentrated on foreground and
background of our portraits. Then we did
an indoor location shoot, where I was able to use additional flash, which
really helped me to understand how it all works.
We
also did a photo shoot in studio.
Technical
task A and B
Technical
task and B have really helped me to understand the health and safety in the
studio as well as the difference between measuring light between ambient and
flash as well as incident and reflective meter readings. These two tasks have
really helped me, as when I went into studio I was a lot more confident with
all of the rules. I knew what I had to look around for and why I should be careful,
because after the research I have found out how dangerous it can be if you don’t
follow the rules. Second part of this task, which was technical task B, about
measuring the light, has really helped me with studio photo shoot, as well as
location.
Technical
task 3A
This
has really helped me to understand high and low key as well as the difference
between them two I have also looked at some photographers who really like high
and low key photos. I was a little bit struggling to find low key
photographers, but I have found quite a few of high key and I was able to see
their work and I have found some really good examples.
Technical
task 3B
This
task has really helped me to understand the difference between all of the
different light that can be used in a studio. By doing this research I was able
to see the examples of each light and then I could have decided which light I
want to use in my final photo shoot. I really liked this task, because it was really
helpful.
We
also got another chance to work in studio using three different kinds of
lights. This practise has really helped me with understanding the difference
between available lights in studio. I have also understood how important light
is and how it can completely change the effect of the photo in terms of mood
and feelings. This also helped me to understand which lights I want to choose
in my final photos and why, it was very helpful as we were also able to try out
each lighting.
Final
studio photo shoot went well. Overall I am very happy about my final photos. I
really like them and it was very hard to only pick few favourite ones. Unfortunately because of my make-up artist and
props that wasn’t carefully thought through, and all of it went wrong, I had to
quickly change my plan to completely different film. I have decided to do
Cleopatra which ment that I had to quickly change make up of my model and the
dress which she was wearing was matching the theme of Cleopatra therefore it
wasn’t hard to change the film within 15 minutes. After the photo shoot I did a
research about Cleopatra film from 1999, which tell us about Cleopatra’s life.
Final
location photo shoot went well. I have spent few days
on doing my location photo shoot. I have been taking photos during
different family events, including Christmas as well as days out with family. I
am happy with most of the photos. I have a variety of photos from outdoor as well
as indoor location, few from night time and the rest from day time. It was very
hard to take photos in an outdoor location as the weather is Poland was very
cold, and it was hard to control the camera on a very cold as well as snowy
day. That’s why I might not have a big selection of photos, but I was trying my
best to take at least 5 photos per day when we were out in a location. Overall
I have used an additional flash as well as tripod to take some night time
photos. It was also nice taking photos of family, as I was confident to ask
them to stand here or there.
I
have also used Pinteres which is linked to my blogger profile. On Pinterest I
have collected inspirational photography, to help me with my final photos as
well as ideas. Another thing that affected my work during this project was that
half way through the project all of my photo analysis deleted of my blog, and
because I had to do this again, I have wasted quite a lot of time just because
I didn’t make sure that I have saved it somewhere else as a copy. Overall I
have really enjoyed the project, but I think it would have been even better if
we would have more of the technical tasks, and a lot more practice as well as regularly
getting feedback on our photos.
Editorial Pieces
This is my first editorial piece. It
is an editorial piece from the film of Cleopatra from 1999. I have used a blank
page, size of A3 paper to create this editorial piece. The colours that I have
used for this article are very simple. I have used a blank page and decided not
to change the background colour. As the borders of the small photos I have used
the colour that matches some elements of my models dress, which is light blue.
I have also decided to use this colour at the top of the first page for the
rectangle where I have placed my subheading. I think this colour looks nice as
it matched my models dress. On one side I have decided to put a big picture,
which I think presents the character of Cleopatra very well. I have left a
small border around the photo. I have also used another photo from my photo
shoot in studio which I have cut around and placed right at the top of the
first page, next to the main heading of my editorial piece. The other three
photos have been laid out at the bottom of the first page. I have created a
small blue border around them to separate them from each other as I have
overlaid them. The layout of the text has also been thought through carefully. I
have decided to put the subheading right at the top of the page, instead of the
heading, which is right underneath the subheading. We can see which one is
which, as the main heading is a lot bigger from the subheading. I have used a special
font for the main heading, which is also called a Cleopatra font, and I have
used a really big size to make it stand out. The subheading is twice as smaller
as the main heading, and I also wanted to use a different font to separate
them. The main texts have been separated into few paragraphs, but are all in
the same basic font and the same size of 12. We can see the first small
paragraph, which is right underneath the main heading, and then two small paragraphs
in two columns, right next to each other and another long paragraph along the
three small photos at the bottom of the page. I have decided to use the same
colour for all of the main text as well as the heading and subheading. I have
used black colour. I have also used a black symbol of the eye of horus, which
simply means protection and Cleopatra has been using it a lot, therefore I have
decided to use it in my article.
This is my second editorial piece from
the film of Cleopatra. I have used the size of A3, dividing the page in half
with made A4 size. By doing this it is a lot easier for me to layout the photos
and text. In this editorial piece I have used mainly black and white colours of
text, but also some of them are blue. I have decided to use these colours
because they match the colour of my models dress. For this editorial piece I
have decided to use six photos from my studio photo shoot. I have laid them out
carefully and thoughtfully. I have decided to put four of them, with a portrait
format at the top of the page, three of them on one side and the other one on
the other page. The other two photos are in a landscape format and have been
placed at the bottom of the first page. Half of the picture is in the box and
the other half is on the outside of the box. I have also created a small white
border around these two photos. The layout of the text is also very simple but
effective. I have obviously put the main heading first, at the top. It’s big
and bold in the colour of black. For my heading I have used a special Cleopatra
font. Underneath the main heading, I have decided to place, a first small
paragraph, in a simple font of size 12. This time I have used light blue
colour, to make it stand out front the main heading. As we go down the page, we
can see that I have placed a big black box with two small paragraphs of white
text, with the same simple font also in the size of 12. At the top of black box
we can see a little bit bigger writing in blue, which is Cleopatra’s name in
Greek. On the next page I have decided to also put the eye of honur, as a background
of the bottom half of the page, and overlay the text, two paragraphs, in the
same font and size but this time in black colour.
This is my third editorial piece for
Cleopatra film, it’s also in a size of A3. For this editorial piece, I have
only decided to use black text, and pictures are in colour. I have used five
pictures from studio photo shoot in this editorial piece. I have used one photo
on the first page, but I have decided to put a shape on it, which meant that it
would cover a bit of my photo, but I really like this idea and I think it looks
effective. On the next page, I have only used four small photos, and I have
placed them between the three paragraphs. I have decided to put the main
heading which is ‘’Cleopatra’’ on the second page, but also at the top so that
it catches the readers eye. On the first page, I have put two very small
paragraphs, about Cleopatra, and covered the rest of the blank page, with word ‘’Cleopatra’’
and then I have changed the opacity of it to 50%. On the next page, I have
placed three paragraphs, about the rest of the film.
This is my first editorial piece for my second film that I have chosen to do. This editorial piece is in a size of A3. I have decided to use mainly white colour as a background but also green borders and boxes as well as different kinds of lines to underline the main title. I have only used four pictures in this editorial piece. One, which is placed right under the main title on the first page, and then as we go down the page we can see two others in a border. One of them which is in the shape of circle to match the border around it and the other one is normal landscape format, right next to it. For my fourth photo I have decided to split it into small but long pieces, because I think it looks quite interesting. The layout of the text has also been thought through. I have decided to use small size and very simple font for the main writing, all in the black colour to make it stand out from the light background. It has all been separated into paragraphs so it’s easier to read. The main title is a lot bigger and also has been written in a completely different font, because I wanted to make it stand out. I have also used a lot of black snowflakes in this editorial piece, as well as a shape of Christmas tree right at the top of the first page next to the title.
This is my second editorial piece for this film. I have also used a blank landscape format page in the size of A3 to create this editorial piece. For this editorial piece, I have decided to mainly use colours like, grey, black, white as well as dark red. I have created few boxes, for the text as well as few lines to decorate the pages. I have only used three pictures. One big one on the first page and two smaller ones on the next page. I have laid them out carefully, matching the outlines of the white box left in the middle of the second page. The layout of the text is also very simple, because I have used small but simple and easy to read font for the main text and separated it into small paragraphs all over the first and second page. I have also used a special font for the main title, and created few small snowflakes all around the editorial piece.
